Celebrating St Francis Xavier

Happy Feast of St Francis Xavier!

St Francis Xavier was a Jesuit who was missioned to bring the Christian message to India, Japan, and an island off the coast of China.* One characteristic of his mission was his willingness to adapt to local culture and custom. Although there were many intercultural challenges, his flexibility in relating to other peoples supported his mission. I also pray today for a variety of friends who have departed for other locales for the sake of mission (or vocational call), including several Jesuit friends who live all over the world. Ignatius was willing to send his friend elsewhere in order to support the mission of the Society. Xavier’s freedom and willingness to go and serve where God called is also a model for us.

St Francis Xavier, pray for us!

*as a colleague who offered the homily pointed out today, Francis never made it to mainland China!
