Bartolome Murillo, Nativity with the Annunciation to the Shepherds Beyond
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!
On this celebration of Christmas we can recall the tenderness of Mary as she holds and cherishes the child Jesus. While he was born into a world of darkness, temporarily homeless and soon to be a refugee, all this is set aside. The time immediately following his birth itself was surely a moment of pure joy. For any mother, after the hard work of labor, there is only sheer delight in the child’s existence. When a child is born, prayer requires no words. The physical nearness of simply holding or nursing is a wordless kind intimacy. All the trials of the preceding hours are forgotten and the peaceful bliss of the presence of the Beloved one is front and center.
We, too, can imagine visiting, holding, perhaps singing to or caressing the Christ child. We can reflect on where today we find the Christ child in our midst and offer Him reverence and love.
